GLORIETA CAMPS MEGA-SH ELTER
During the 2022 Hermits Peak Calf Canyon Wildfire

The Calf Canyon Hermits Peak Canyon Wildfire was the largest most destructive wildfire in the history of New Mexico. The fire burned 341,471 acres between April 6, through August 21 ,2022. 903 structures destroyed. Mora County and parts of the City of Las Vegas required evacuation.

On April 29, 300 students from the United World College in Las Vegas, New Mexico evacuated to Glorieta Camps, a Christian summer adventure camp. This was the only large facility near the fire with the capacity to serve as a mega shelter.

As the fire grew over 800 evacuees including animals, fire and disaster workers co-located at this facility. Operations continued for 30 days.

This presentation will describe the unique challenges faced by over 40 disaster agencies during the operations. ln addition to mass care this location served as a fire camp and a FEMA staging area for 300 staff arriving to New Mexico from across the country. The NM Medical Reserve Corps provided many medical services for the duration of this operation. Lessons learned and lessons observed
will be shared.

Presented by Martin Vigil, NM MRC volunteer and recently retired Director of Santa Fe County Office of Emergency Management.
