Communications TrainingVIRTUAL - Defending Against Disinformation: A Trusted Messenger Workshop
Location:
Date/Time: Description: Additional Information: In this moment of toxic polarization, declining support for journalism, and the spread of new generative AI technology, distinguishing fact from fiction has become increasingly challenging. However, data shows that despite this, people trust friends and family—more so than the media. By leveraging these personal connections, communities can play a vital role in spreading fact-based information. PEN America’s Trusted Messenger Program is an attempt at leveraging this trust and supporting community-level resilience against false and misleading information. This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of mis/disinformation, strategies for protecting themselves, and will equip attendees with tools to navigate difficult conversations with friends and family. Following a presentation on understanding disinformation and effective communication tactics, participants will break into small groups to practice these skills.
